1. License agreement

Please read the file LICENSE.txt for the license agreement associated
with this software.

2. Revision history

0.2.1 (99-07-19)
- Fixed: Performance part voice bank now contains correct options.

0.2 (99-05-16)
- Added voice parameter editing.
- Added voice bulk dump send/receive.
- Changed main dialog to use tab control.
- Changed save file format. The new format is backward read-compatible
with 0.1 format, but now stores voices as well.
- Changed configuration file format (freefs.cfg). The MIDI configuration
data from the 0.1 format should be compatible, but the file history
may not be. If there is a problem, just delete freefs.cfg and restart
  the program.

0.1.1 (99-04-30)
- Fixed: Controller source matrix is now mapped correctly between the GUI
  and sysex data.

0.1 (99-04-25)
- First release.

3. System requirements

- 486/66 or faster x86 compatible processor
- Windows 95 (may work on 98/NT)
- VGA (640x480 or higher; 1024x768 recommended)
- Windows compatible MIDI interface
- 120 KB minimum free disk space

4. Installation

To install, unzip the distribution into any directory where you wish to
install FreeFS. Since FreeFS does not use the Windows registry, you may
move or remove the installed files without running a specific
uninstallation procedure. FreeFS will create a configuration file
named freefs.cfg in your installation directory to store static information.
If you are experiencing problems with the software, you might try removing
this file.

5. How to use the bulk dump

FreeFS will recognize both performance and voice dumps from the FS1R.
FreeFS includes a full set of performances from the FS1R's factory
Internal bank. The easiest way to retrieve the Internal bank from your
own FS1R synthesizer is to use the "Get bulk dump" option from the
MIDI menu. Once the Sysex dialog is up, on the FS1R, select
UTIL->DUMPOUT->Perform->all for a performance dump, or
UTIL->DUMPOUT->Voice->all for a voice dump. When all 128 performances
or voices have been downloaded, the Sysex dialog should close. If it
doesn't close automatically, then some of the data may not have transferred
correctly. In that case, try increasing the delay interval in dumps on
the FS1R by selecting UTIL->SYSTEM->MIDI->DumpIntrval and increasing its
value.

6. Saving data

FreeFS has not yet been fit with an auto-save or save warning mechanism,
so after an editing session, be sure to save your work!

7. Parameters not yet present

Some parameters on the FS1R are not yet accessible from the FreeFS GUI.
However, these parameters (except for FSeqs) are still stored in memory
and tranferred to and from the FS1R. For example, FreeFS does not allow
you to change the effects settings for each part, but if you do a
performance dump from the FS1R, the effects settings will be stored in
FreeFS so that a subsequent dump from FreeFS will send the correct
values.

8. Bug reports, questions, comments

Please send all bug reports, questions, and comments to
Peter Huang <peter@mutone.com>. Also, as this is a very early ALPHA version
of the software, there are obviously a ton of features missing that could
and should be there. Please be patient; we'll release frequent updates to
FreeFS until it is fairly feature complete.
